The Courage to Say Yes

I grew up in a small Texas town with two hardworking parents who taught me the value of showing up, doing my best, and working hard. In a place where not many people looked like me, I learned early how to fit in and become what others expected me to be.

I carried those lessons into adulthood. I went to college, built a successful corporate career, got married, raised a family, and checked many of the boxes I thought were supposed to equal a good life.

But something was missing.

For years, I had a deep awareness of what was happening around me. I noticed what people said and what they didn’t say. I read between the lines. I felt things deeply. And eventually, I could no longer ignore the truth that although my life looked successful, I was miserable.

So I began praying and fasting for direction.

One of my prayers was for God to help me leave corporate America. Then an unexpected company bonus gave me enough financial breathing room to consider something that felt terrifying: walking away without having my next move figured out.

After talking with my husband, I did it.

I thought I was stepping into rest, but I quickly discovered I didn’t know how to rest. I was restless, uncertain, and constantly asking God, “What now?”

Eventually, conversations about speaking and podcasting began opening doors. A few people encouraged me, and that was enough. I started the Bernitha Rena Relates Podcast, began sharing stories, meeting incredible people, speaking publicly, and discovering more of who God created me to be.

Today, that journey is leading me toward coaching and entrepreneurship.

My story is still being written. I still don’t know exactly what comes next. But I know this: every time I have trusted God enough to say yes, I have experienced a deeper peace, greater joy, and a more authentic life.

I am learning that obedience doesn’t always come with a complete plan.

Sometimes God simply asks for your yes.
